Agriculture is one of the most important economic sectors in Bangladesh, which includes crops, fisheries and livestock. The agricultural sector contributes about 11 percent to Bangladesh’s GDP and employs about 42 percent of the total labor force. There are about 16.9 million agricultural households in the country whose main livelihood is agriculture.
It is challenging to provide services to a large number of farmers in a transparent manner in the shortest possible time through conventional agricultural services and information management. On the other hand, the experiences of various countries show that the challenges of providing agricultural services in a transparent manner can be easily resolved if brought under digital management.
Although the Krishak Card has been introduced in various countries of the world with a limited number of services on a small scale, it is in Bangladesh that the first comprehensive service has been introduced under the plan of the Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman to introduce a universal Krishak Card covering crops, fisheries and livestock. In addition, where applicable, farmers of other sub-sectors of agriculture declared by the government (i.e., salt farmers) will be included in the Krishak Card.
The “Krishak Card” program is an integrated digital identity for the country’s farmers, which is a groundbreaking initiative to ensure targeted subsidy provision, technical advice, agricultural inputs and market management, as well as fair prices for farmers and all services related to agriculture, fisheries and livestock under one umbrella. The Krishak Card is not just a card, it will be a symbol of dignity and security along with fair rights for every farmer in Bangladesh, where the farmer will be in the highest priority and respect.
Various services will be provided to farmers through the Krishak Card, such as: obtaining agricultural inputs at fair prices, fish farming/harvesting, distribution of livestock and poultry farming inputs, provision of government subsidies and incentives, facilities for obtaining agricultural farm equipment at low prices, irrigation facilities at fair prices, distribution of agricultural loans on easy terms, agricultural, fisheries and livestock insurance facilities, facilities for storing and selling agricultural products at fair prices, training on agriculture, fisheries and livestock, obtaining weather, livestock disease outbreak and market information on a digital platform, and advice on controlling crop diseases and pests.
